A new homestead

For many months, Gia and I have ruminated over the need to purchase a new home to house our new instantly upsized family. We searched near, far, high and low. Finally, we cast our gaze upon a budget priced shell of a home in the Prestonwood neighborhood, roughly 2 miles from work (and our current townhome). It’s cliche to say that we fell in love with it immediately, but then again, cliches exist because they’re true.

The house was built in 1969 and features roughly 2,300 square feet of living space.

One of the things we loved the most about it was the large amount of yard space, and the preponderance of mature trees.

The inside is adequately large for our needs, yet cheap enough to (barely) fit within our budget. Of course, the house lacks flooring, which according to the bank’s definition of a home, makes this merely a structure with walls, roof, plumbing and wiring, and not a house. To get this “building” qualified as a “house”, we have to get flooring installed within 2 weeks for the loan to be properly processed.

I still believe it may have been possible to raise triplets in a townhome. But the truth is we are soft and decadent bourgeoisie, dependent upon the gadgetry that facilitates modern parenting (three swinging chairs takes up way more space than three infants do). The extra space will be nice (the higher costs of heating and cooling it won’t be). The children will have more room to run around, which will hopefully allow a balance of physical and mental development appropriate for the sports-centric social norms of the United States of America.

In the meantime, we won’t be budging from the townhome. The new house needs to be renovated before it is habitable, and we expect that to take about a month. It also gives me some time to nurse my financial wounds. It occurs to me that this is the most expensive thing that I have purchased for somebody else. How is that? You see… I just bought the triplets a new house…
